the right coast

July 3, 2012 by Chip

Ahhh…color, beach, bikinis.  I really enjoy Florida. I was recently commissioned for a five-day marketing shoot running around Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach, Kennedy Space Center and all the places that encompass the Space Coast to show off the potpourri of touristy things to do in the area.  I knew NASA.  I knew Ron Jon’s.  I knew a few other things from my time coming to the area as a kid every year to visit the grandparents, but gigs like this [...]

homer. harry. spidey. barney.

May 22, 2012 by chip

Spent a couple days working with a few characters up at Universal Studios for a marketing shoot a few months back.  Truly one of the most enjoyable gigs when the client hands you a keys to their park and says “have fun.” We (I and my super-stud assistant Brian Blanco) spent the days running from roller coaster to roller coaster with essentially an Alien Bee on a painter’s pole meeting guests and making pictures much as I would have at [...]

I-4 or bust

February 1, 2012 by chip

I-4 is an interesting road.  Connecting Daytona, Orlando and Tampa, it slices the nub of South Florida right off the map, it provides a vast array of landmarks – strange kitschy theme parks, vasectomy billboards, and rest stop oasis after oasis.  It is also fertile ground for voters and an area candidates target every election cycle. The New York Times sent me with a reporter and videographer to tackle I-4 man-on-the street style to try to find folks opinionated about [...]

the hunt for red

June 27, 2011 by chip

Ah, red…how I missed thee. I don’t hang my camera around my shoulder everywhere I go anymore.  It’s not the fact that I don’t enjoy shooting, because I love it more than anything other vice I have, but I just don’t feel like everything needs to be photographed at every moment.  There’s too much of that going on right now.  I have an iPhone like everyone else just in case a Pulitzer happens to fall in my lap.  I want [...]

spf

June 14, 2011 by chip

Well, it was go to the beach and be the only dude wearing jeans in nearly 100 degree weather day. Life as a Florida photojournalist could be rougher, I guess, but for a simple story about new F.D.A. regulations for the marketing of sunscreen (running in tomorrow’s New York Times) you would think finding someone doing just that would be easier.  It was either run around with a telephoto and look like a creep or get up close and run [...]

coloroholic

April 22, 2011 by chip

If color was a drug, I’d be a total junkie. I don’t know what it is, but for me just driving and finding a new wall to shoot against is my addiction.  Sometimes I won’t even shoot, I’ll just shake my head, mutter to myself about how cool it would be with a person in it, and drive on.  I always make a note of it on my phone and return for that magical time when some kid with a [...]

what the hipsta?

April 11, 2011 by chip

Never thought this day would come. This was purely shot out of spite, obligation, and curiosity.  After all of the “Hipstamatic is the Devil” posts (here) I have written on this blog, I thought it would be only fair to pay iLucifer the $1.99 to download the app I think may or may not be the death of modern photography.  I took it for a spin in my free time on Harbour Island in the Bahamas during a wedding [...]

$20 monogrammed toilet paper

March 24, 2011 by chip

I can’t even think of what I could eat that would warrant a $20 monogrammed single roll of toilet paper, but nonetheless it exists. I thought Naples was the richest city in Florida.  Then I went to Worth Ave. in Palm Beach. I parked my beat down VW in an alley because it just looked sad amongst the Lambos, Jags, and Hummers.  I was sent to Naples and Palm Beach in one weekend to hit high end shopping districts for [...]
