the right coast

July 3, 2012 by Chip

Ahhh…color, beach, bikinis.  I really enjoy Florida. I was recently commissioned for a five-day marketing shoot running around Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach, Kennedy Space Center and all the places that encompass the Space Coast to show off the potpourri of touristy things to do in the area.  I knew NASA.  I knew Ron Jon’s.  I knew a few other things from my time coming to the area as a kid every year to visit the grandparents, but gigs like this [...]

homer. harry. spidey. barney.

May 22, 2012 by chip

Spent a couple days working with a few characters up at Universal Studios for a marketing shoot a few months back.  Truly one of the most enjoyable gigs when the client hands you a keys to their park and says “have fun.” We (I and my super-stud assistant Brian Blanco) spent the days running from roller coaster to roller coaster with essentially an Alien Bee on a painter’s pole meeting guests and making pictures much as I would have at [...]

beach bum

October 10, 2011 by chip

Just stay on the sand. I love these kinds of assignments…and these type of clients.  Bay Magazine is visually helmed by Bruce and Suzette Moyer up at the St. Petersburg Times, and they do an amazing job with their photo play in the high-end travel/lifestyle magazine every month. My gig was about perfect – just drive the coastline of Florida from Ft. DeSoto Park in St. Petersburg to Clearwater Beach, stop, head to the beach and make [...]

coloroholic

April 22, 2011 by chip

If color was a drug, I’d be a total junkie. I don’t know what it is, but for me just driving and finding a new wall to shoot against is my addiction.  Sometimes I won’t even shoot, I’ll just shake my head, mutter to myself about how cool it would be with a person in it, and drive on.  I always make a note of it on my phone and return for that magical time when some kid with a [...]

$20 monogrammed toilet paper

March 24, 2011 by chip

I can’t even think of what I could eat that would warrant a $20 monogrammed single roll of toilet paper, but nonetheless it exists. I thought Naples was the richest city in Florida.  Then I went to Worth Ave. in Palm Beach. I parked my beat down VW in an alley because it just looked sad amongst the Lambos, Jags, and Hummers.  I was sent to Naples and Palm Beach in one weekend to hit high end shopping districts for [...]

zut alors!

February 22, 2011 by chip

“Zut Alors!” I always cursed my decision to take French in high school, but the one time I could have used it, the only thing that kept creeping into my brain was that little phrase from class I always thought was hilarious.  It has no real place or relevance to these pictures, just thought it was funny that it popped into my head in thinking of a title for this post. Anyhoo, that tangent aside, I spent the weekend in [...]

potter redux

January 10, 2011 by chip

Harry Potter is quickly becoming my forced-upon muse. I got a call from The New York Times last week to head back up to Universal Orlando to shoot at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter again – followers of this blog will remember that Harry Potter made a few appearances last year as well (here, here, and here).  Ironically for the same clients.  So I grabbed my invisibility cloak and headed up for an early morning trip back to Orlando [...]

there’s no place like home

December 16, 2010 by chip

It’s the curse of living in a town that feeds off tourism. As a photographer, I want nothing more than to just go…to leave and just go make pictures in a new place.  I live in a town that people go do that very thing, so when a client needs a travel piece done anywhere near here it’s not really travel per se.  It’s just a 5 minute drive instead of a whirlwind 15 hour plane ride to [...]

vacation crasher

November 27, 2010 by chip

I’ve said it before, but my favorite assignments usually involve getting a call from an editor, asking me to go to place “x” for a few days and shooting “whatever.” Luckily, this time place “x” was a private island off the coast of southeastern Georgia for a multiple page spread in Bay Magazine – a high-end lifestyle mag put out by the St. Petersburg Times.  Little St. Simons Island is 10,000 acres of mostly untouched marshes and beaches with a [...]

potter in print

June 18, 2010 by chip

I got a few requests to see the layout of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter pictures for The New York Times Travel piece the other day…so here you go. Nice little 7 column photo inside over a truk, plus a 6 column on the front.  So nice to see papers commit themselves to good photo play when most are stuck in what seems like a forever-shrinking newshole. Original post:  here. More on Photoshelter:  here. Tweet
