we’re talking about practice? | espn the mag

May 1, 2013 by Chip

A single practice on a Tuesday doesn’t really seem that significant in the long terms of a NBA season, but it’s the little things in one given day that build up to a playoff run. ESPN the Magazine sent me to meet up with fellow photographer, Steve Boyle, to tackle one practice at the Indiana Pacers team facility in Indianapolis, Indiana, for their recent photo issue.  The idea was to just go crazy covering what a playoff team does [...]

sidelines and silhouettes

December 10, 2012 by Chip

Spent yesterday sweating profusely trying to remember what winter feels like.  For this Colorado kid transplanted to Florida, these 80 degree days in December are now common unlike when I was transplanted here in 2002 – ironically, the same year the Buccaneers won the Super Bowl. Yesterday’s game was full of those players ten years removed from being at the top of their game when I was just starting.  The big names were back – Jon Gruden, Keyshawn Johnson, Warren [...]

a buc’s life

September 10, 2012 by Chip

I was sent into the stands for yesterday’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa with only one real mission – stay off the field and document a Bucs fan’s life. I spent all four quarters wandering the cement staircases and dark runnels of the stadium just documenting fans, which a great break from trudging up and down the sidelines dodging sound guys and referee butt.  The fans were in a great mood luckily [...]

the lomo roll

July 3, 2012 by Chip

ESPN the Magazine called with a strange request. Hey (paraphrasing) can you go to Miami and photograph a MLB baseball player making sushi? Umm, sure? Turns out that Miami Marlins player, Logan Morrison, was designing his own sushi roll to sell at Mr. Yum in Calle Ocho.  Why?  Well beyond the obvious marketing on both sides, there was a quiet and very touching reason:  $4 of every $18.95 would go to American Lung Association in memory of his father. Moreover, you [...]

the creamsicle strikes back

December 8, 2011 by chip

Return of the creamsicle…love it. For a team that wears red all season long, I seem to get hired by the Bucs when they throwback or go pink, but I’ll take it.  I always love shooting for public relations in these situations, because I’m generally given the (paraphrasing) “Here’s the images we need, but otherwise have fun” job.  I’ve covered dozens of games at this stadium over the years, but always try to find a few new things to shoot. [...]

creamsicle chroma

December 6, 2010 by chip

The return of the creamsicle.  Love it. I actually really dig the NFL throwback games, because as fun as NFL games are to cover, every Sunday tends to have a bit of Groundhog’s Day effect visually.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers broke out the creamsicle uniforms from the start of their franchise for their game against the Atlanta Falcons yesterday up in Tampa.  If only all NFL teams could rock 70′s inspired jerseys all the time.  Things would be groovy – [...]

the green vest

October 18, 2010 by chip

The Red Vest Society is a clandestine community of sports photographers limited by painted yellow lines and laminated pieces of papers strung around necks.  The official uniform is the branded-out red vest that blares one word in all caps…PHOTOGRAPHER.  Just in case you didn’t know that this guy wasn’t one with the camera and all.  We sign our lives away on waivers.  We eat barely legal food.  We submit to Sunday morning rubber-gloved pat-downs.  Our jeans have grass stains and [...]

the mini gridiron

September 5, 2010 by chip

If only NFL could give us this kind of access. It’s not so much I need to photograph NFL stars to make photos I like, it would just be great to cover a NFL game without a 400mm and be able to shoot action with my wide 95% of the time.  And in money sunset light.  And in a muddy field a block from my house.  And without stands, bleachers, TV crews, random people strolling the sidelines, advertising banners, [...]
