black and white friday

November 25, 2011 by chip

I need an intervention.  I went to land of red – Super Target – and converted everything to black-and-white.  I must be in a post-turkey, up all night haze. For as much of a color junkie I am, you would think that an assignment to shoot the 12 a.m. Black Friday shopping at Super Target would be like heaven.  In fact, there may be such a thing as too much color.  I said it.  First step is admitting I [...]

50mm on the 50 yard line

August 26, 2011 by chip

If there’s one thing I actually really miss about my newspaper job is that Friday night ritual of destroying my jeans one knee at a time, the battle of grainy photos shot on unreal ISO’s versus Noise Ninja, and cursing the roster for not having that one player with the number you need. Ahhh, high school football. I popped out to this game tonight at Booker High as a visual vacation from staring at my screen all day [...]

sunsets and silhouettes

July 31, 2011 by chip

I spent the week doing a couple things I don’t do very often – disconnecting, actually going to the beach for fun (instead of a shoot), and putting my camera down for a while. The eye candy one night this week was too insane to play around in for a few frames. For as much as I use them, I always have to look up the proper spelling of “silhouettes,” and it still looks wrong…and for as close as Siesta [...]

spf

June 14, 2011 by chip

Well, it was go to the beach and be the only dude wearing jeans in nearly 100 degree weather day. Life as a Florida photojournalist could be rougher, I guess, but for a simple story about new F.D.A. regulations for the marketing of sunscreen (running in tomorrow’s New York Times) you would think finding someone doing just that would be easier.  It was either run around with a telephoto and look like a creep or get up close and run [...]

to endo or not to endo

April 24, 2011 by chip

I don’t know if there was any cooler or easier of a trick than jamming my foot into the front tire of my BMX back in the day trying to master a footjam endo. Such glory in busting one’s face on a beautiful Saturday morning on whatever military base my dad was stationed at the time. It was either that or stealing plywood from his garage, stacking up some bricks and making sweet jumps. Alas, I digress.  These were [...]

the mini gridiron

September 5, 2010 by chip

If only NFL could give us this kind of access. It’s not so much I need to photograph NFL stars to make photos I like, it would just be great to cover a NFL game without a 400mm and be able to shoot action with my wide 95% of the time.  And in money sunset light.  And in a muddy field a block from my house.  And without stands, bleachers, TV crews, random people strolling the sidelines, advertising banners, [...]

tipping point

August 21, 2010 by chip

I feel like a Wallenda. Constantly on a thin wire, tip-toeing along.  Trying to make images that my newspaper can run and ones I like.  Nik Walleda had another trick last night – balancing atop 70 ft. swaypoles in the middle of St. Armand’s Circle – at one point switching poles while swaying back and forth in that deep blue sky and feathered clouds I’ve come to abuse so much down here in Florida. While in essence there is an [...]

a call to arms – photojournalism is not dead

August 13, 2010 by chip

It’s not just stuff. I drive by this house everyday.  Every day.  They lived a a few blocks over from me.  Until they got notice of foreclosure and the locks were being changed.  Donald and Teresa Beardsley have lived in this home with the decaying Virgin Mary statue out front for 30 years. And like that, it’s gone. It’s not a new story, really.  Foreclosures are everywhere.  This family is caught up in what is being investigated at a fraudulent [...]

wish you were here

July 31, 2010 by chip

Ever come across that scene where you sit there and try to mentally will a body into the frame to make a picture?  Well, welcome to my hell the other night. It just happens.  Perfect sunset, perfect light.  Nobody around.  I’m not going to tell you where this is, because I’m going back every night for the next three months if I have to in order to get some random person sitting here. Chalk this up to an almost cliche. [...]
