sidelines and silhouettes

December 10, 2012 by Chip

Spent yesterday sweating profusely trying to remember what winter feels like.  For this Colorado kid transplanted to Florida, these 80 degree days in December are now common unlike when I was transplanted here in 2002 – ironically, the same year the Buccaneers won the Super Bowl. Yesterday’s game was full of those players ten years removed from being at the top of their game when I was just starting.  The big names were back – Jon Gruden, Keyshawn Johnson, Warren [...]

swing state blues (and reds)

November 14, 2012 by Chip

21 hours of red, white, and blue. I spent election day cross-crossing Florida a bit for the wonderful folks at The New Yorker with a really amazing crew of photographers I had no idea I was shooting alongside (Peter van Agtmael, Kenneth Jarecke, Stanley Greene, Jon Lowenstein, Andrea Bruce, Landon Nordeman, etc.) with until I starting seeing galleries coming in on their site. Florida is a crazy state.  There is no denying that any weird story that happens to pop [...]

sidelines, parking lots, and nosebleeds

October 23, 2012 by Chip

Normally when I tell people that I get to shoot for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, their first reaction is “Wow, you must have the best seat in the house!”  That is true, however, I spend most of the time under-using my credential to stand right next to those who ask that very question in section 328. My job helping out the awesome photo team on game day is to capture fans like these from the last two Bucs’ home games [...]

on self-assignments (with a side of mud, booze, and rednecks)

July 31, 2011 by chip

If you don’t like the assignments you are given, make your own. Shooting for free is the kiss of death in this industry, but there’s a time for everything.  Sometimes, a self-assignment is worth it.  If you are a staffer, the daily grind of assignments can beat you down with every building mug and press conference.  If you are a freelancer, the times when the phone doesn’t ring can seem like an eternity.  I suggest one of two things: either [...]

the hunt for red

June 27, 2011 by chip

Ah, red…how I missed thee. I don’t hang my camera around my shoulder everywhere I go anymore.  It’s not the fact that I don’t enjoy shooting, because I love it more than anything other vice I have, but I just don’t feel like everything needs to be photographed at every moment.  There’s too much of that going on right now.  I have an iPhone like everyone else just in case a Pulitzer happens to fall in my lap.  I want [...]

creamsicle chroma

December 6, 2010 by chip

The return of the creamsicle.  Love it. I actually really dig the NFL throwback games, because as fun as NFL games are to cover, every Sunday tends to have a bit of Groundhog’s Day effect visually.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers broke out the creamsicle uniforms from the start of their franchise for their game against the Atlanta Falcons yesterday up in Tampa.  If only all NFL teams could rock 70′s inspired jerseys all the time.  Things would be groovy – [...]

the green vest

October 18, 2010 by chip

The Red Vest Society is a clandestine community of sports photographers limited by painted yellow lines and laminated pieces of papers strung around necks.  The official uniform is the branded-out red vest that blares one word in all caps…PHOTOGRAPHER.  Just in case you didn’t know that this guy wasn’t one with the camera and all.  We sign our lives away on waivers.  We eat barely legal food.  We submit to Sunday morning rubber-gloved pat-downs.  Our jeans have grass stains and [...]
