potter redux

January 10, 2011 by chip

Harry Potter is quickly becoming my forced-upon muse. I got a call from The New York Times last week to head back up to Universal Orlando to shoot at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter again – followers of this blog will remember that Harry Potter made a few appearances last year as well (here, here, and here).  Ironically for the same clients.  So I grabbed my invisibility cloak and headed up for an early morning trip back to Orlando [...]

best of 2010

December 20, 2010 by chip

This year was a year of transitions for me. Transitioning. From staff  to freelance. From shooting what they want to what I want. From not owning my photos to realize the value of holding copyright. From big fish in little pond to small fish in big pond. From saying yes to saying no. From ? to inc. From understanding that I have a lot to learn and going out and learning it. From buying to investing. From shooting on-the-side to [...]

there’s no place like home

December 16, 2010 by chip

It’s the curse of living in a town that feeds off tourism. As a photographer, I want nothing more than to just go…to leave and just go make pictures in a new place.  I live in a town that people go do that very thing, so when a client needs a travel piece done anywhere near here it’s not really travel per se.  It’s just a 5 minute drive instead of a whirlwind 15 hour plane ride to [...]

creamsicle chroma

December 6, 2010 by chip

The return of the creamsicle.  Love it. I actually really dig the NFL throwback games, because as fun as NFL games are to cover, every Sunday tends to have a bit of Groundhog’s Day effect visually.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers broke out the creamsicle uniforms from the start of their franchise for their game against the Atlanta Falcons yesterday up in Tampa.  If only all NFL teams could rock 70′s inspired jerseys all the time.  Things would be groovy – [...]

murder in celebration

December 3, 2010 by chip

Gawrsh, something happened in Mickey’s town. A m-u-r-d-e-r. It was the first one in 14 years since the master-planned community was developed by Disney.  People always equate suburbia and cookie cutter homes to “Pleasantville” and the like, but Celebration is about as close as you are going to get to the epitome of landscaped perfection.  Everything is immaculate, people are overly-friendly, and nothing ever happens…can’t believe I’m writing like a morning news show… …until the other day when a man [...]

vacation crasher

November 27, 2010 by chip

I’ve said it before, but my favorite assignments usually involve getting a call from an editor, asking me to go to place “x” for a few days and shooting “whatever.” Luckily, this time place “x” was a private island off the coast of southeastern Georgia for a multiple page spread in Bay Magazine – a high-end lifestyle mag put out by the St. Petersburg Times.  Little St. Simons Island is 10,000 acres of mostly untouched marshes and beaches with a [...]

a republican star is born

November 3, 2010 by chip

Yes, He Can. You can see it now.  It’s not from policy or polls or pundits, but from a gut feeling.  It’s coming from a purely visual person who has covered politics for a few elections now.  This guy will be running for president someday.  He has the look, the cute kids that make cute photos, the bigger-than-life speech, the story, the beautiful wife, and a following of dark-blue suit and heels and mini-dress clad fans ready to anoint him.  I’m [...]

the green vest

October 18, 2010 by chip

The Red Vest Society is a clandestine community of sports photographers limited by painted yellow lines and laminated pieces of papers strung around necks.  The official uniform is the branded-out red vest that blares one word in all caps…PHOTOGRAPHER.  Just in case you didn’t know that this guy wasn’t one with the camera and all.  We sign our lives away on waivers.  We eat barely legal food.  We submit to Sunday morning rubber-gloved pat-downs.  Our jeans have grass stains and [...]

step away from the holga and no one gets hurt

September 23, 2010 by chip

I’m sorry, as cool as your out-of-focus, Hipstawhatever iPhone looks, it isn’t creative. I don’t know how more bluntly to put it, but the proliferation of imagery lately is slowly sucking the creativity out of photography.  In fact, it has become more formulaic than anything else.  I’m just as guilty.  Just scroll down and see my last post.  I find a wall with some random graffiti cover-up and a splash of paint and I nearly wet myself.  It’s refreshing.  Therapeutic. [...]

the mini gridiron

September 5, 2010 by chip

If only NFL could give us this kind of access. It’s not so much I need to photograph NFL stars to make photos I like, it would just be great to cover a NFL game without a 400mm and be able to shoot action with my wide 95% of the time.  And in money sunset light.  And in a muddy field a block from my house.  And without stands, bleachers, TV crews, random people strolling the sidelines, advertising banners, [...]
