great scot

July 10, 2012 by Chip

Through a flood of whisky, losing golf balls, and navigating nightclubs I was able to make a couple photos during a recent trip to celebrate a fellow photog’s bachelor party in Scotland.  That party happened to be in some really beautiful country in Edinburgh and the island of Islay, so it was tough to leave the camera behind.  In fact, kind of impossible. One of these days, I’m going to go on vacation from my camera…but probably not.     [...]

the right coast

July 3, 2012 by Chip

Ahhh…color, beach, bikinis.  I really enjoy Florida. I was recently commissioned for a five-day marketing shoot running around Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach, Kennedy Space Center and all the places that encompass the Space Coast to show off the potpourri of touristy things to do in the area.  I knew NASA.  I knew Ron Jon’s.  I knew a few other things from my time coming to the area as a kid every year to visit the grandparents, but gigs like this [...]

homer. harry. spidey. barney.

May 22, 2012 by chip

Spent a couple days working with a few characters up at Universal Studios for a marketing shoot a few months back.  Truly one of the most enjoyable gigs when the client hands you a keys to their park and says “have fun.” We (I and my super-stud assistant Brian Blanco) spent the days running from roller coaster to roller coaster with essentially an Alien Bee on a painter’s pole meeting guests and making pictures much as I would have at [...]

¡viva la mexico!

February 23, 2012 by chip

I don’t know how a photographer can ever actually go on vacation – it might take a cement room devoid of any color in Des Moines for me to actually leave a camera aside and take a “vacation” from “work.” I constantly find it amazing we can call photography work. Oh well, let me load up the carousel with some slides and make you sit through my vacation photos.  Here I was in Mexico…then here’s that colorful wall I waited [...]

legoland florida (aka primary color heaven)

October 28, 2011 by chip

Red, Yellow, Blue, Green…any possible color you can think of.  Everywhere.  Literally. I can’t think of really a better place to feed my addiction to color than LEGOLAND Florida, and luckily I get to call them a regular client.  The gig, which I haven’t really talked much about out here in Socialmedialand, fell in my lap from a great recommendation from another photographer in LA who called me to cover their initial press conference (last photo).  The historic, but [...]

beach bum

October 10, 2011 by chip

Just stay on the sand. I love these kinds of assignments…and these type of clients.  Bay Magazine is visually helmed by Bruce and Suzette Moyer up at the St. Petersburg Times, and they do an amazing job with their photo play in the high-end travel/lifestyle magazine every month. My gig was about perfect – just drive the coastline of Florida from Ft. DeSoto Park in St. Petersburg to Clearwater Beach, stop, head to the beach and make [...]

on self-assignments (with a side of mud, booze, and rednecks)

July 31, 2011 by chip

If you don’t like the assignments you are given, make your own. Shooting for free is the kiss of death in this industry, but there’s a time for everything.  Sometimes, a self-assignment is worth it.  If you are a staffer, the daily grind of assignments can beat you down with every building mug and press conference.  If you are a freelancer, the times when the phone doesn’t ring can seem like an eternity.  I suggest one of two things: either [...]

sunsets and silhouettes

July 31, 2011 by chip

I spent the week doing a couple things I don’t do very often – disconnecting, actually going to the beach for fun (instead of a shoot), and putting my camera down for a while. The eye candy one night this week was too insane to play around in for a few frames. For as much as I use them, I always have to look up the proper spelling of “silhouettes,” and it still looks wrong…and for as close as Siesta [...]

final launch

July 8, 2011 by chip

I’m always amazed that I have spent a decade in Florida, and have never witnessed a Space Shuttle launch.  That changed today – too bad it was the last one. Beng a part of the Reuters team that was sent to cover the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-135 was a wonderful experience on a few levels – obviously feeding the geek from my childhood is always fun to revisit.  There’s a lot of geek to revisit.  Secondly, there is a [...]
