pdn – school of hard knocks

August 3, 2011 by chip

Had a nice chat with Holly Stuart Hughes over at Photo District News for an article in their September Education Issue about what I’ve learned so far freelancing with a much wider net (wedding, magazine, newspaper, pr, sport, commercial, etc.) this go-round after falling flat on my face a few years back.  Go check it out in their digital edition (here). I’m the opening act for Zack Arias. Tweet

japan in photos

March 13, 2011 by chip

Wow. No other words can describe the imagery and devastation coming out of Japan right now following the earthquake and subsequent tsunami Friday.  Whenever anyone asked where I always wanted to go in the world if I had my choice, the answer has always been Japan.  I never got the chance to see it  - I hope the Japanese people recover from this sooner than later, but I can’t even imaging the amount of lives lost and destruction in the [...]

there’s an app for photojournalism

February 9, 2011 by chip

So do you think this is photojournalism? If the answer is yes, then what we knew as photojournalism at it’s purest form is over and POYi just killed it.  Well, they didn’t kill it so much as just dig another knife deeper into the back of its decaying corpse.  It’s time to really address the crossroads we’re at in photojournalism and figure out where it’s headed versus what it was. I think it’s fair to say I’ve made my thoughts [...]

100 things completely right about our jobs

December 8, 2010 by chip

Sometimes we all need reminders.  I wrote this in 2007 for Sportsshooter.com, with the help of the inspiring photo geeks with aphotoaday.org.  Enjoy. 1. We could be sitting in a cubicle right now processing paperwork….for the rest of our lives. 2. Seeing something that no one else sees. 3. Looking at people for an extremely long amount of time and not having to feel creepy about it. 4. The sound of a shutter…and someone not noticing. 5. Realizing my entire portfolio [...]

bitter and then some

December 7, 2010 by chip

You know, the Internet is a weird place. There are some things I write that I truly mean.  There are others I write just to poke the flames a bit and start conversations – like my own little message board. Do I honestly think the Holga/Logo/Diana are bad things to shoot with?  No.  Hipstamatic apps?  Yes.  Strange how that rationale works. (click here to read rant #1)  Three of my top 5 favorite photographers working today, Todd Heisler , Damon Winter, [...]

open letter to newspaper photographers

November 16, 2010 by chip

Dear Newspaper Photographer, If you think you are safe in your job, you aren’t. I say that bluntly to make the point stick.  You are a number.  You are expendable.  Your work will win awards.  Your work will sell papers.  In the end, if they don’t sell that ugly ad around your photo, you don’t have a job.  Period.  Nothing short of winning a Pulitzer (and that doesn’t even count – ask the amazingly talented Rocky Mountain News or The [...]

so a geek, an iPhone, and a 5d walk into a bar

September 29, 2010 by chip

Yes, I realize the irony of this photo in light of my last post. I walked into a bar with my camera.  I had my iPhone.  Not a Holga.  That would have been the trifecta.  To save face, I did walk in there with a sizable posse of other photojournalists, visual artists, and editors during this past weekend’s Geekfest in St. Petersburg.  For those that don’t know, Geekfest is a weekend of photo juiciness and inspiration put on by aphototday.org [...]

step away from the holga and no one gets hurt

September 23, 2010 by chip

I’m sorry, as cool as your out-of-focus, Hipstawhatever iPhone looks, it isn’t creative. I don’t know how more bluntly to put it, but the proliferation of imagery lately is slowly sucking the creativity out of photography.  In fact, it has become more formulaic than anything else.  I’m just as guilty.  Just scroll down and see my last post.  I find a wall with some random graffiti cover-up and a splash of paint and I nearly wet myself.  It’s refreshing.  Therapeutic. [...]

haiti

January 17, 2010 by chip

Generally, I try to keep the blog self-serving.  I might have 2, perhaps 3, readers (thanks mom, dad, and refresh browser).  I’m sitting here at 6:00am in my boxers with my daughters watching “Yo Gabba Gabba” on a flatscreen television.  I can go to the fridge and choose between bottled water, the filtered water out of the dispenser, or tap water (which I don’t drink).  I have plenty of clothes to wear.  After spending the morning clicking through the latest [...]
