casey’s circus

July 19, 2011 by chip

Well, it is Florida. I never really understood why Florida attracts these huge random news stories that seem to take on a life of their own – drawing every Nancy Grace, live truck, and iphonarazzi™ to our neck of the woods.  I’ve covered a more than a few of these.  The abduction and murder of Carlie Brucia, Terry Jones, the pastor who hosted Burn a Koran Day, and Terry Schiavo.  All three were elevated by the media and, yes, I [...]

the image, deconstructed

May 28, 2011 by chip

Just got featured on The Image, Deconstructed, which is a wonderful new platform run by Ross Taylor that breaks down a photograph and the thought process into making that single image.  There has been some wonderful talent featured as of late, so I’m in great company. Check it.  Here. Tweet

history or his story?

May 5, 2011 by chip

At first glance the photo is history.  This is the moment in time that will forever be remembered. For what most of what America saw in print, the images were completely false.   By now, most have heard the photo of POTUS announcing that Osama bin Laden had been killed was a re-enactment.  Still shooters were kept out of the room during the televised address to the nation.  Second passed, then President Obama walked right back in and fakes it [...]

what the hipsta?

April 11, 2011 by chip

Never thought this day would come. This was purely shot out of spite, obligation, and curiosity.  After all of the “Hipstamatic is the Devil” posts (here) I have written on this blog, I thought it would be only fair to pay iLucifer the $1.99 to download the app I think may or may not be the death of modern photography.  I took it for a spin in my free time on Harbour Island in the Bahamas during a wedding [...]

you had me at swamp

March 20, 2011 by chip

There are a few reoccurring themes in my work down here in Florida, but none that seem to stalk me more than rednecks and mud. I got a call from ESPN the Magazine to go cover the Swamp Buggy Races down in Naples, FL, a couple weekends ago and once I see the caller i.d., my mind start racing as to what killer gig it will be this time (because, honestly, when they call it usually is).  This one [...]

japan in photos

March 13, 2011 by chip

Wow. No other words can describe the imagery and devastation coming out of Japan right now following the earthquake and subsequent tsunami Friday.  Whenever anyone asked where I always wanted to go in the world if I had my choice, the answer has always been Japan.  I never got the chance to see it  - I hope the Japanese people recover from this sooner than later, but I can’t even imaging the amount of lives lost and destruction in the [...]

there’s an app for photojournalism

February 9, 2011 by chip

So do you think this is photojournalism? If the answer is yes, then what we knew as photojournalism at it’s purest form is over and POYi just killed it.  Well, they didn’t kill it so much as just dig another knife deeper into the back of its decaying corpse.  It’s time to really address the crossroads we’re at in photojournalism and figure out where it’s headed versus what it was. I think it’s fair to say I’ve made my thoughts [...]

i’ll just shoot some weddings

February 2, 2011 by chip

I wish it were that easy. Obviously, the newspaper and magazine world is in flux.  Photographers are ducking for cover and holding onto staff positions when they can and others frantically preparing exit plans when they finally pull the eject lever.  Some have that lever pulled for them and are left floating through the air with a “What now?” look on their face. “I’ll just shoot some weddings.”  Sounds easy enough, right? Nope. Look, I’m the first to admit that [...]

best of 2010

December 20, 2010 by chip

This year was a year of transitions for me. Transitioning. From staff  to freelance. From shooting what they want to what I want. From not owning my photos to realize the value of holding copyright. From big fish in little pond to small fish in big pond. From saying yes to saying no. From ? to inc. From understanding that I have a lot to learn and going out and learning it. From buying to investing. From shooting on-the-side to [...]
