go irish and/or roll tide

January 9, 2013 by Chip

Sometimes the big game is just a big dud. There are blowouts every week in sportsland, but would would expect the BCS National Championship Game to be more of a – cough – game.  Not so much.  My challenge is to make something out of it.  I sat there after the first half with Alabama up several touchdowns up on Notre Dame and ate a terrible hot dog in a media room where all the photographers just looked depressed.  All [...]

leica x2 in the caribbean

September 10, 2012 by Chip

Opened up a sweet little box a few weeks back to find a Leica X2 for me to review…such an amazing little camera.  If you are in the market, find out my thoughts over at The Photo Brigade. For Leica X2 Review, click here. While you’re at it, pop around the site by Robert Caplin.  He’s doing some great thing on The Photo Brigade – especially for those in school looking for solid resources for information on how to freelance [...]

ok @instagram, you win. #apublicapology

December 30, 2011 by chip

You know what, Instagram?  I’m sorry. I cursed you and your buddy Hipstamatic for the last couple years.  You were destroying our industry, flooding our market with imagery, and making the construction and process of image-making too easy and less intellectual.  I was one of, if not the guy who wrote the blog post that started the whole Damon Winter/POYi mess.  I cursed iPhoneography, Holgaroids, and Urban Outphittography™.  Oooooh, I like that – Urban Outphittography.  Note the ™. I’m big [...]

black and white friday

November 25, 2011 by chip

I need an intervention.  I went to land of red – Super Target – and converted everything to black-and-white.  I must be in a post-turkey, up all night haze. For as much of a color junkie I am, you would think that an assignment to shoot the 12 a.m. Black Friday shopping at Super Target would be like heaven.  In fact, there may be such a thing as too much color.  I said it.  First step is admitting I [...]

legoland florida (aka primary color heaven)

October 28, 2011 by chip

Red, Yellow, Blue, Green…any possible color you can think of.  Everywhere.  Literally. I can’t think of really a better place to feed my addiction to color than LEGOLAND Florida, and luckily I get to call them a regular client.  The gig, which I haven’t really talked much about out here in Socialmedialand, fell in my lap from a great recommendation from another photographer in LA who called me to cover their initial press conference (last photo).  The historic, but [...]

pdn – school of hard knocks

August 3, 2011 by chip

Had a nice chat with Holly Stuart Hughes over at Photo District News for an article in their September Education Issue about what I’ve learned so far freelancing with a much wider net (wedding, magazine, newspaper, pr, sport, commercial, etc.) this go-round after falling flat on my face a few years back.  Go check it out in their digital edition (here). I’m the opening act for Zack Arias. Tweet

hey hot shot!

July 21, 2011 by chip

Got a nice little write up from the fine folks over at Jen Bekman Gallery and 20×200 for the upcoming Hey Hot Shot! competition.  I have no idea if I’ll make the cut or not, but it was cool to read someone else’s take on a project I literally do just for fun when I’m bored or in need of a visual reset. Thanks – love the site! Tweet

the image, deconstructed

May 28, 2011 by chip

Just got featured on The Image, Deconstructed, which is a wonderful new platform run by Ross Taylor that breaks down a photograph and the thought process into making that single image.  There has been some wonderful talent featured as of late, so I’m in great company. Check it.  Here. Tweet
