we’re talking about practice? | espn the mag

May 1, 2013 by Chip

A single practice on a Tuesday doesn’t really seem that significant in the long terms of a NBA season, but it’s the little things in one given day that build up to a playoff run. ESPN the Magazine sent me to meet up with fellow photographer, Steve Boyle, to tackle one practice at the Indiana Pacers team facility in Indianapolis, Indiana, for their recent photo issue.  The idea was to just go crazy covering what a playoff team does [...]

a week with wolverines | espn the mag

March 6, 2013 by Chip

I love gigs for this client.  ESPN the Magazine sent me to follow around the University of Michigan Wolverines for a week as they entered a tough stretch of games in the BIG 10.  I travelled with the team on their plane and buses all day with full access to whatever we needed.  Quite refreshing access, and the University was amazing with their hospitality. This was a part of the 1 Day 1 Game coverage for ESPN [...]

go irish and/or roll tide

January 9, 2013 by Chip

Sometimes the big game is just a big dud. There are blowouts every week in sportsland, but would would expect the BCS National Championship Game to be more of a – cough – game.  Not so much.  My challenge is to make something out of it.  I sat there after the first half with Alabama up several touchdowns up on Notre Dame and ate a terrible hot dog in a media room where all the photographers just looked depressed.  All [...]

the lomo roll

July 3, 2012 by Chip

ESPN the Magazine called with a strange request. Hey (paraphrasing) can you go to Miami and photograph a MLB baseball player making sushi? Umm, sure? Turns out that Miami Marlins player, Logan Morrison, was designing his own sushi roll to sell at Mr. Yum in Calle Ocho.  Why?  Well beyond the obvious marketing on both sides, there was a quiet and very touching reason:  $4 of every $18.95 would go to American Lung Association in memory of his father. Moreover, you [...]

lebron, wade, and i

April 5, 2012 by chip

So LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and I were there together hanging out and….well, there really isn’t going to be a time I get to say that again, so I’m going to take advantage now. I was lucky enough to be part of the huge team that the fine folks at ESPN the Magazine put together for their latest One Day, One Game series. The point is to give fans a glimpse into everything that it takes for one single game [...]

you had me at swamp

March 20, 2011 by chip

There are a few reoccurring themes in my work down here in Florida, but none that seem to stalk me more than rednecks and mud. I got a call from ESPN the Magazine to go cover the Swamp Buggy Races down in Naples, FL, a couple weekends ago and once I see the caller i.d., my mind start racing as to what killer gig it will be this time (because, honestly, when they call it usually is).  This one [...]

roll tide

November 6, 2009 by chip

I was sweating out a prep football practice here in Florida when ESPN the Mag called with a cool last minute assignment.  Always fun to see their name on the caller I.D.  I was to jet off to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for the weekend to cover the University of Alabama Crimson Tide take on their bitter rivals – the University of Tennessee Volunteers.  It got even better.  I didn’t need to cover every-down, game action – just wander the stadium making [...]
