ok @instagram, you win. #apublicapology

December 30, 2011 by chip

You know what, Instagram?  I’m sorry. I cursed you and your buddy Hipstamatic for the last couple years.  You were destroying our industry, flooding our market with imagery, and making the construction and process of image-making too easy and less intellectual.  I was one of, if not the guy who wrote the blog post that started the whole Damon Winter/POYi mess.  I cursed iPhoneography, Holgaroids, and Urban Outphittography™.  Oooooh, I like that – Urban Outphittography.  Note the ™. I’m big [...]

hey hot shot!

July 21, 2011 by chip

Got a nice little write up from the fine folks over at Jen Bekman Gallery and 20×200 for the upcoming Hey Hot Shot! competition.  I have no idea if I’ll make the cut or not, but it was cool to read someone else’s take on a project I literally do just for fun when I’m bored or in need of a visual reset. Thanks – love the site! Tweet

houston deconstructed

February 7, 2011 by chip

Landmarks and maps are for the devil. When I travel I’m usually shooting pre-determined locations that reveal the best side of a certain location for some magazine or newspaper. I was in Houston, Texas, to shoot a wedding this weekend for a quick 36 hours.  On Saturday, I took advantage of being a father and not being able to sleep in for the life of me.  I woke up early, grabbed a 5D Mark II, a 50mm f/1.4 and just [...]

step away from the holga and no one gets hurt

September 23, 2010 by chip

I’m sorry, as cool as your out-of-focus, Hipstawhatever iPhone looks, it isn’t creative. I don’t know how more bluntly to put it, but the proliferation of imagery lately is slowly sucking the creativity out of photography.  In fact, it has become more formulaic than anything else.  I’m just as guilty.  Just scroll down and see my last post.  I find a wall with some random graffiti cover-up and a splash of paint and I nearly wet myself.  It’s refreshing.  Therapeutic. [...]

accidental rothko (v3.0)

May 27, 2010 by chip

Whenever I need a kick start visually, I always try to revert back to something fun and meaningless. My so-called “Accidental Rothko” series is always on-going leading me through hoods and alleyways, warehouses and strip malls looking for interesting splatters of paint, decaying walls, and graffiti cover-ups reminiscent of Mr. Rothko’s paintings.  This is a hodgepodge of frames from Lake Okeechobee, St. Petersburg, Bradenton, and back home in Sarasota. If anything, this little project gets me recharged, it also gets [...]

accidental rothko (v2.0)

April 18, 2009 by chip

Second verse, same as the first. I don’t know what it is about this project, but I’m having fun with my scavenger hunt for graffiti cover-ups.  I think I might go insane in some place like New York City seeing these on every corner, but here in Sarasota it is definitely a little bit of a challenge.  I’m getting to know my local alleys and restaurant loading docks pretty well. Once I can’t find any more locally, I’m moving onto [...]

accidental rothko

April 10, 2009 by chip

I was on the way home tonight from an assignment when one random shot led me into about 3 hours of shooting graffiti cover-ups around Sarasota.  There is actual a graffiti eradication program through the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office which is really quick on covering up any scribblings or art that pops up around town.  Some of this I’m sure is their handiwork, but the rest I have to imagine are business owners just grabbing whatever paint can is closest [...]
